College English Department undertakes all the College English teaching work for non-English majors. There is a total of 26 staff, including 24 full-time teachers, among whom there are 1 professor, 4 associate professors and 19 lecturers. Holding senior professional title or Master Degree, most teachers are on the higher side in qualifications, have in-depth research on College English teaching and get great achievements.
Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University attaches great importance to College English teaching. Leaders of the University, deans of each department and heads of colleges and all teachers give their support and concern to the construction and development of College English Department. Facilitated with nine advanced language and multi-media rooms, 13,000 books and references, as well as abundant video, the department now can satisfy the needs of teaching and scientific research.
The department undertakes all the College English teaching for more than 5000 non-English major students who take English as their supplementary courses. In addition to the required courses for regular graduates and post-graduates, it offers more than 40 selective courses for students, such as Practical English, Selected Readings From American and British Press, Advanced English Reading, Advanced Oral English, British and American culture, and British and American survey, that fully ensure quality-oriented education. It also creates environment with multiple dimensions for foreign language learning and practicing on various occasions through secondary English learning classroom where colorful and abundant entertainment and activities are held.
Through deepened reform on College English teaching and aiming at improving students' overall quality and English application ability, the division has re-laid down teaching program and teaching plan, finished overall planning for learning and teaching, separated teaching from test, established examination database and re-checked teaching materials, to realize unification in teaching materials, simultaneous teaching progress, examination paper marking in order to improve College English teaching quality. It lay stress on management over students. College English course turns out to be the most popular course among students, with the help of responsible personnel in each department and college and teachers in charge of classes.
The teachers of the department put more emphasis on and are active in teaching and scientific research, holding regular discussions on special subjects, and have published over 90 essays, over 100 treatises, teaching materials, reference books and translations. Many projects above university-level have been completed or are proceeding regarding scientific research and course construction. Since its foundation, it has obtained a number of awards, with one teacher receiving award titled "Zengxianzi Education Fund", two getting "Municipal-level Discipline Leader" and "Key Young Teacher", and many winning titles of "Excellent Lecturing Teacher", "Outstanding Teaching Achievements" and "the Advanced in Teaching".
