Foreign Languages
The Foreign Languages School (FLS) takes it as its main mission to train English teachers for the secondary or higher vocational institutions. After four years of study, students are equipped with pedagogical and psychological knowledge as well as a solid foundation in the four basic skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. With the development of the society, the school has made every effort to deepen the reform in teaching and curriculum design, to introduce more specialties, and to diversify its programs. In recent years its program has been extended to interpreting and translation and business English, to meet the social needs. There are about 900 full-time students currently in the school.
The FLD is committed to bringing to its students the best English environment on campus through both curricula and co-curricula activities. It strives to provide numerous English language use opportunities, such as English Corner, English Festival, English Newspaper, and various kinds of contests and activities, to prepare its students for their future careers.
The FLD has a faculty with academic prestige and educational experience. The majority of the teachers have PhD's or Master's degrees; about one third of them have studied abroad. Some are currently studying for a degree at universities. There are 10 professors and associate professors as well as a group of brilliant lecturers. Their academic interests are broad, including Chomskyan TG grammar, Hallidayan SFG, China English, American Literature.
The FLD has kept wide contact with vocational middle schools in Guangdong Province where its students have their practice teaching of English as required by the program and its teachers are engaged in their research on how English is taught in polytechnic schools in the Chinese context.
